The Carbone Timeline

1929: Joe Carbone & Phil Sacco establish C&S Garage on Wetmore Street in Utica.
1930s: Joe becomes sole owner of Carbone Motor Sales.
Graham-Paige franchise added.
Studebaker franchise added.
International Trucks also carried.
Move to 1216 Bleecker Street location.
Carbone Motor Sales at 1216 Bleecker Street spotlighted the Studebaker line, as well as used cars.
1953-1957: Carbone Sales & Service operated in Rome.
1955: Carbone Auto Lease formed as separate entity.
1957: Dodge franchise added.
1958: Yorkville Dodge purchased.
1963: Dodge dealership moves from Bleecker Street to a brand new facility on Commercial Drive in Yorkville. Don Carbone joins father at Dodge City.
1968: Pontiac is added to the line-up, at another new facility on Commercial Drive. Al Carbone becomes manager. Still another franchise is added - Ford - and operated in downtown Utica, through the purchase of Dahl Motors.
1971: Subaru franchise added.
1973: Honda joins the Carbone Group. Harley-Davidson franchise is also added during this period.
1975: Carbone Auto Group begins offering rental cars.
1977: Gurney Pontiac dealership in Syracuse is purchased (sold in 1995).
1984: Don-Al Management Company is formed.
1986: A third new Commercial Drive facility is built to house the Honda franchise.
1988: Suzuki franchise added.
Late 1980s:
Grandchildren start joining business, assuming increasingly responsible roles, eventually to include Joe, Enessa, Don Jr., and Alex.
1990s: BMW, Buick, Cadillac and Nissan franchises are added.
1997: Carbone Boonville opens, offering Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep.
1997: Acura franchise is added.
1997: Group introduces expansive indoor center for pre-owned vehicle sales during cold weather seasons.
1998: The Group expands into Bennington, Vermont, offering Honda and Toyota.
1998: Carbone Wholesale Auto Auction is established, offering pre-owned vehicles to auto dealers throughout the United States.
1998: Carbone Used Car Reconditioning Center is added.
1999: Carbone Wholesale Auto Parts Division is created, selling and delivering parts throughout upstate New York and Albany areas.
2000: Carbone Insurance Agency formed.
2001: www.carbonecars.com is launched as a resource offering a variety of sales support functions, including model and pricing information, inventory search and customer communication.
2002: Carbone Hornell (Pontiac-Buick-Cadillac-GMC) established (closed in 2003).
2002: Don Carbone is named New York State Dealer of the Year by the New York State Automobile Dealers Association and is subsequently recognized as one of the top five auto dealers in the nation in TIME Magazine's Quality Dealer of the Year Award Program.
2003: A Hyundai franchise is added as the Group purchases the former E.J. Peters dealership on Commercial Drive.
2003: A world-class motorcycle showroom and service center is built on Commercial Drive for the Group's Harley-Davidson and Buell operations.
2003: A new cutting-edge facility is built to house the Honda and Toyota franchises in Bennington.
2004: Saab joins the line-up, through the acquisition of the former Tobin dealership of Clinton.
2004: System-wide dealership refurbishing accelerates, resulting in ultra-modern showrooms, service centers and customer conveniences. Enhancements such as expanded hours, quick lube oil changes and vehicle rust proofing are added.
2005: A new facility for the Nissan franchise is built on Commercial Drive.
2005: A Hyundai franchise is added in Bennington.
2005: Carbone expands into Rome, with a Ford-Lincoln-Mercury dealership.
2006: The Group added Genuine Scooters to its product offerings.
2007: State-of-the-art Honda facility, boasting more than 28,000 sq.ft. of floor space, opens on Commercial Drive adjacent to previous location.
2007: Renovations to Don's Superstore completed, with complex featuring a remodeled showroom, and enlarged service advisor and work areas.
2008: Carbone adds another Harley-Davidson dealership to the Group by acquiring Van's Harley-Davidson Motorcycles of Gloversville and renaming it Adirondack Harley-Davidson.
2008: Carbone Group named Business Humanitarian of the Year by American Red Cross.
2008: Chevrolet added to line-up through purchase of C. Weaver Chevrolet.
2008: Carbone Ford-Lincoln-Mercury of Rome undergoes complete remodeling.
2008: Al Carbone is New York State Dealers Association's Dealer of the Year and nominee for TIME Magazine Quality Dealer of the Year Award.
2008: Carbone Ford-Lincoln-Mercury of New England is established in North Adams, Massachusetts.
2009: Carbone Group marks 80th anniversary.
2009: Group processes 531 vehicles in federal "Cash for Clunkers" program.
2009: Group adds Facebook and Twitter social networking capabilities.
2010: Wholesale Auto Auction, Collision Center and Reconditioning operations consolidated at former C. Weaver facility.
2010: New lot to showcase commercial trucks added to Don's Ford-BMW-Subaru complex.
2010: Carbone Subaru in Troy, New York established through acquisition of Advantage Subaru.
2011: Second brand-new dealership complex opens in Bennington, housing Ford and Hyundai.
2011: Construction of new Harley-Davidson dealership in Broadalbin, New York underway to open in the fall.
